History

Mario Prada opened Fratelli Prada as a leather goods shop in Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in 1913. The brand supplied fine leather goods to Italian aristocracy and was appointed as an official supplier to the Italian royal household. Miuccia Prada, Mario’s granddaughter, took creative control in 1978, transforming the brand from a traditional leather goods house into a global fashion powerhouse.

Miuccia’s breakthrough came in 1984 with the introduction of a black nylon backpack (the Vela), using industrial Pocone nylon fabric previously reserved for military tents and parachutes.
